We are living amidst what is potentially one of the greatest threats in our lifetime to global education, a gigantic educational crisis.  As of March 28, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic is causing more than 1.6 billion children and youth to be out of school in 161 countries. This is close to 80% of the world’s enrolled students. And most countries have very unequal education systems, and these negative impact will be felt disproportionately specially those poor children. And this pandemic has turned the spotlight on one of the problems that hasn’t been resolved until now: making a hard time to the students and teachers.

There have been obvious gaps in the Philippines educational system in the past, the current pandemic highlights a stark divide: access to education for those who can afford and those who can’t. Department of Education (DepEd) announced that class opening for the school year 2020-2021 on October 5 would use a blended approach to learning as the country deals with the pandemic.  As the government limits face-to-face interaction and prohibits mass gatherings, DepEd’s blended learning approach is implementing with students learning from online class, and printed modules.

Many students are having hard time and struggling with the blended learning. Most of the students and parents cited as reasons for not going to school in August for they lacking of access to the internet and technology at home, no work to provide for the family, and safety – given fears of contracting COVID‑19. Numerous post on social media have gone viral, showing Filipino students climbing trees or even mountains, just to get good internet signal for their classes.  There are news that some of the students are committing suicide because they can’t finish it or they didn’t pass it at the right time.

Many of students experiencing a lot off troubles and struggles with this blended learning which is happening right now and based on my experience it is really challenging and stressful. In the first week of my modular learning, I am having a hard time answering the modules specifically on those topics that aren’t familiar to me and haven’t enough knowledge about the topic. There topics that are hard to understand and tasks that are difficult to answer because the examples from the concept notes aren’t enough and far from the given in the task which to be answer and I had to search it from the internet to understand more about the topic. When we have online classes, I am having trouble using my data network because in the middle of our discussion, its glitches or hanging and sometimes it get blurs. There are many tasks to do and answer which we– students are rushing out of time just to finish the tasks that is needed to pass. I have to stay up late and wake up early to answer these tasks and I’m worried because I might palpitate anytime but luckily I don’t skip meals. Blended learning is quite depressing to me to the point I cried because I thought I can’t finish it at the right time. But then I always keep it in my mind that I need to study hard and sacrifice for my dreams and for my family. It’s not only the students are struggling but also teachers who are trying their best to help us to chase our dreams. They are sacrificing their safety just to teach us, printing our modular which are to be given to our parents our printed modular and sacrificing a lot of time on printing and making it.

It’s okay to cry, to pause for a bit, to get tired, and to rest but don’t give up on your dreams, it’s all part of our journey to become successful because all of it will be worth it someday. If you don’t know what to do, ask God for guidance and wisdom to help you with your online class and your modular learning. According from Tibetan Proverb “A child without education, is like a bird without wings”.

The mission of all education system is the same, it is to overcome the learning crisis we were already living and respond to the pandemic we are all facing. The challenge today is to reduce as much as possible the negative impact this pandemic will have on learning, schooling, and build on this experience to get back on path of faster improvement in learning.

To all students out there, FIGHTING!!
