Treasurer and preserve

Ilocos Sur has a rich heritage and unique culture that is to be preserved for the next generations because it is observed that many of these traditions, songs, dances and other Ilocano culture are not familiar to the younger generation already .

Kannawidan is an Ilocano term meaning feast of rich heritage and culture. It is also a variant of the Ilocano word “tawid” meaning heritage or inheritance. Kannawidan is a variant of this Ilocano word "tawid" means heritage or inheritance. It began in 1992, Guia Monroy Valenciano, then vice-president of PCI Bank sounding out to friends about establishing a museum.

There is also a need to evaluate the different products of the different municipalities and the agricultural product and livestock of the farmers and fisher folks. Because of this, the provincial government of Ilocos sur considered a festival that will highlight these cultures and traditions and to attract local and foreign tourists as well. Through this Kannawidan Festival children may appreciate their rich culture and traditions. Also on the opening day of the festival, a traditional ritual is performed by the students of Ilocos Sur, especially high school students. There are different contests that focus on the ability and skill of the students. These include traditional tribal rituals, choir, and glee club competition, marching band contest, traditional music and symbol, dance drama, traditional and folk dances, contemporary dance competition and street dancing showdown .

One mission of this festival is paying more attention to the children because they are paying more attention to the modern and nobility dances they see on television than the traditional ones. The local government of Ilocos Sur thought of this festival to encourage the younger generations to learn the indigenous songs and dances of the province.
